Decide which details matter to your home
Photograph the current windows from inside and outside. Note the opening pattern, frame proportions, glazing divisions and handles you want to keep or change. A traditional appearance can be approached in different ways, including timber, flush casement, sash and Residence9 designs. Those names describe different aspects of a window, so compare the actual proposed detail.
Ask about upkeep for the exact finish
Compare the manufacturer’s care instructions for the finish being quoted. Think about whether you can easily reach the outside of each window and how you will clean opening sections. Avoid deciding that a material needs no care at all: the glazing, hardware, seals and finish all need appropriate attention. Ask what routine care the selected system requires.
Compare glazing and frames as a complete window
Frame material alone does not establish the performance of an installed window. Ask for evidence relating to the proposed frame-and-glazing combination. Double and triple glazing are different options; discuss their suitability for the opening and the room. Include ventilation in the conversation rather than assuming a more sealed opening is the whole answer.
Check the opening pattern and everyday access
Consider how you reach handles, whether furniture or blinds restrict the opening and how the exterior layout relates to neighbouring windows. Ask which arrangements are available for each shortlisted system. If a window is difficult to use now, explain that problem explicitly so it is included in the design discussion.
Put the options on the same quotation schedule
List each opening and compare its proposed frame, glass, finish, hardware and installation scope. Ask whether removal, disposal and making good are included. If your property is listed or subject to local restrictions, confirm the requirements before choosing a replacement; a traditional-looking product does not by itself establish approval.
Compare your starting points
| Option | Useful discussion | Ask to see |
|---|---|---|
| PVCu | Opening styles, colours and the detail around existing openings | The exact profile, glazing and finishing specification |
| Aluminium | Frame lines, opening arrangement and coordinated door finishes | The quoted system’s sections and whole-window evidence |
| Timber | Natural material, traditional details and future care | Finish samples and manufacturer maintenance guidance |
Your questions answered
Is aluminium always more efficient than PVCu?
A material name is not enough to compare window performance. Request evidence for the complete products and glazing combinations in the quotations.
Can I have a traditional look without timber?
Shire offers alternatives to discuss, including Residence9, flush casement and sliding sash designs. Compare the actual frame details and any requirements affecting your property.
Should every room use the same window layout?
A consistent exterior can still need different opening arrangements for different rooms. Review each opening, its use and relevant requirements during the survey.
